Here's our #birdoftheweek: Ruddy Turnstone! These familiar shorebirds are long-distance migrants, and they fly fast in the process. Researchers have clocked turnstones flying at 27 to 47 miles per hour! Chicks grow quickly, too, learning to fly at only 19 days old and departing for their wintering grounds soon after. A very happy Ruddy Turnstone on this Freedom Friday! This patient came to us with red tide poisoning symptoms. Staff immediately placed the patient in an oxygen cage and administered fluids. After only 7 days in care, the Turnstone had significantly improved and was cleared for release! 🎥: Katie M., Assistant Wildlife Rehab Manager | CROW - Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife, Inc.

Happy Freedom Friday🤍 This Ruddy Turnstone was released at Old Settlers Park on November 8th! The patient was found at a local resort unable to fly. An intake exam found the patient was thin, dehydrated and missing a toe. The Ruddy Turnstones weight slowly increased and they began eating in their own. After 19 days of care, our team was happy to see this patient released! This bird even hung out at the park for a while after being released, taking a bath in the shallow waters on the shoreline

🪶 Bird of the Week: The Ruddy Turnstone Meet the beachcomber of the bird world! 🌊 The Ruddy Turnstone is a striking little shorebird, dressed in bold black, white, and chestnut like nature’s own calico cat. With its bright orange legs and slightly upturned bill, it’s often seen flipping over shells, stones, and seaweed—hence the name “turnstone!” These world travelers breed way up in the Arctic tundra, then spend the rest of the year vacationing on coastlines across the globe—from North Americ
