Here’s how I introduce basic addition using a tens frame (two rows of five squares, making 10 in total). I start with a large mat and foam circles to show a story problem—like 3 apples plus 4 plums equals 7 snack items. Then each child gets their own magnetic tens frame (only two colors, red on one side and yellow on the other) so they can follow along.
