Sporocarp (fungi) - Alchetron, The Free Social Encyclopedia

#Ascomycete cup fungi are lined with millions of microscopic needle-shaped sacs (called asci) full of spores. They are pressure sensitive, so when they get hit with a gust of wind (or in this case me blowing on them), the spore sacs rupture, squirting a cloud of spores into the air to be carried on air currents. If you listen carefully, you can hear an audible “hiss” right when the spores are being released. What a cool method for spore dispersal! . Safety-wise it’s not particularly hazardous to

Here’s a compilation of harvesting morel mushrooms. They are delicious edible gourmet mushrooms that are usually foraged (although groups on China and Denmark have figured out how to cultivate them). Morels are highly valued my foragers and chefs because they have a pleasing spongy meaty texture and incredible nutty sweet ethereal earthy umami flavor that pairs well with a huge variety of dishes and cuisines. . Morels are Ascomycete fungi meaning their spores are packed into needle-like sacs cal

Here I am blowing on some Ascomycete cup fungi (Common Brown Cups - Phylloscypha phyllogena - not edible). These mushrooms are packed with spores in little pressure sensitive sacs called asci (ascus). When they sense a change in air pressure, the needle shaped sac swells up and ruptures, squirting out spores into the air to be carried by the wind. If you turn up the volume, you can actually hear them “hiss” just as the spores are released. Pretty cool way to get your spores out there! Practice t

True Morels (Morchella) are hollow inside and have deep pits in the cap where spores are released from pressure sensitive needle-like asci (sacs of spores). I prefer to cut morels, especially in burn zones. #morel #morels #morchella #foraging #wildfood #foragedfood #tiktoktaughtme #wildmushrooms #mushroomeducation #mycology #fungi #morelmushrooms

These adorable cup mushrooms are #HaresEars #Otidea, they are in phylum #Ascomycota meaning that their spores are packed into long balloon-like sacs called asci. The cup/ear itself in lined with thousands of these little sacs. When there is a change in air pressure (like a gust of wind), minerals build up at the base of the balloons, causing them to squirt out spores in the moving. This is how many Ascos (including morels) disperse their spores. I especially love to see how the cup itself contra

Spore Dispersal by the Ascomycetes fungi! Here I've taken Scarlet elf cup(Sarcoscypha coccinea), which is a member of Division Ascomycota, as an example. ❣🍄🍁 The ascomycetous fungi produce prodigious amounts of spores through both asexual and sexual reproduction. Their sexual spores (ascospores) develop within tubular sacs called asci that act as small water cannons and expel the spores into the air. Dispersal of spores by forcible discharge is important for dissemination of many fungal plant

Happy #MycologyMonday! Check out this perfectly poised Hare’s Ear Fungus (Otidea) popping up from the forest floor. This is an inedible Ascomycete cup fungi/mushroom that grows in mixed hardwood and conifer forests..When you blow into the cup, a change in air pressure occurs that causes the sensitive needle shaped asci lining the inside of the cup to rupture and launch spores up into the air. I love the video because you can actually see the mushroom itself flex when the spores are ejected from

Alfred DH on Instagram: "💣 The ‘Artillery Fungus’ aka Sphaerobolus stellatus. This fungus has a remarkable mechanism for firing its spores, whereby it rapidly flips the cup that the spores sit in inside out, projecting the spores towards light (ie the sun). These were growing on highland cow dung outside Edinburgh. These time-lapses took about 4/5 days to film. _______________________________ #scottishfungi #citizenscience #mycology #macrophotography #macrofungi #olympusphotography #OMsy
